SERVPRO Restores Fire and Smoke Damage Quickly to Ensure Life in Your Seattle Home Gets Back to Normal

Regardless of the scope of a house fire, the levels and layers of damage can be immense. Many homeowners are best off seeking another place to stay during the time that their Seattle home gets restored. Not only is there odorous soot and debris that gets tracked through the house, but there is the potential for breathing in harmful irritants found in soot and smoke residue. The good news is that our trained and IICRC-certified technicians are available 24/7 to address any fire emergency you may have.

Why Do I Need Professional Cleanup for a Small Fire?

Our team at SERVPRO has the skills and equipment necessary to handle your fire and smoke damage quickly in Seattle efficiently. Many airborne soot particles can be invisible to the naked eye. A significant element of fire loss mitigation is the use of advanced equipment that helps to capture all particulates. Some of the methods that we use include actions like:

  • Odor-control equipment that helps to neutralize odors from the fire
  • Total removal and disposal of debris and charred items to cut back on odors
  • Deployment of air scrubber technology, which helps to improve air quality while mitigation takes place

How Can You Prevent Debris and Grime from Getting Tracked Throughout My Home?

In many cases, our team partitions off the fire loss zone from the rest of your interior to limit cross-contamination. It is vital to remove charred building materials and any non-salvageable items carefully and meticulously to prevent tracking. Our crew also wears personal protective equipment (PPE) and foot coverings to cut back on the amount of cross-contamination from one room to the next.

After Extinguishing the Fire, Everything is Wet, Now What?

From the moment that our crew arrives on your property, we assess the damages, which includes looking at all areas where water or chemicals from extinguishing the fire may be present. During cleaning up debris and controlled demolition methods, we also use different tools to locate hidden moisture, including:

  • Moisture sensors
  • Moisture meters
  • Thermal imaging

We carefully of any saturated, non-salvageable materials, and our team uses targeted drying with the help of industrial-strength fans, air movers, and dehumidifiers.

What is a Controlled Demolition?

Depending on the amount of fire damage to your Seattle building materials, controlled demolition might be a necessary step. This process can often save homeowners a considerable amount of money by carefully removing damaged materials and replacing them with brand new items. If you have charred wooden studs, we have a variety of abrasive measures to remove it. Everything is then treated with a special sealant to keep odors from permeating throughout your interior.

What is Done for Smoke Odors?

SERVPRO has a specific process that allows us to remove odorous smoke particles and soot from your home after a fire loss. Every step helps break down stubborn residue while also pinpointing specific areas where particles might have wandered.

  • We offer pack-out services to remove furnishings and personal belongings to clean and deodorize offsite. This service limits the amount of smoke residue transfer into other unaffected areas of your home.
  • We carefully begin cleaning any surfaces covered in soot residue, ensuring that no area gets left untreated. Our trucks house EPA-approved disinfectant solutions and cleaning agents that remove residue from a variety of materials, including sheetrock, plastics, and wood.
  • Should pungent odors occur, we can recreate the event that brought on odor penetration. We have fogging equipment that heats deodorant agents to create a chemical cloud that quickly penetrates materials to target the odor molecules.
  • We can also seal exposed surfaces, such as walls, using special primers before a final coat of color. We also have a process for sealing ductwork in your home if particles have traveled throughout the HVAC system.

When it comes to the equipment that we use most often with a fire loss project, we have the best tools and products in the industry for cleaning and restoring the air quality in your home.

  • Air scrubbers help cut back on debris and particulates throughout your interior.
  • Hydroxyl generators are dual-acting, allowing our crew to filter the air in your home while deodorizing it at the same time. These generators have HEPA filtration, bringing air into the machine where the filter traps debris, particles, and microbes.

Have trained technicians on your side to help with fire and smoke damage is a good feeling. Call us at SERVPRO of Central Seattle at (206) 282-9500 when you need emergency service. Once you call, we can have a team on-site in as little as four hours to get to work!

How Can I Stop Damages from a Fire Affecting My Whole Seattle House?

5/6/2020 (Permalink)

Fire damage in the living room of a home. SERVPRO is here to help your fire damage Seattle.

Containment Is Vital to Stopping the Spread of Soot, Smoke, and Odors – Our SERVPRO Team Can Help.

Knowing how to reduce the spread and severity of fire loss effects is not common knowledge to homeowners, but it is something that professional restoration teams like our SERVPRO technicians begin working on immediately with our arrival. Containment strategies help to keep the damaged area in one place and do not allow the work involved in restoration to be necessary over the entire property.

How Does Containment Work?

When it comes to reducing fire damage in Seattle homes, containment barriers are among the first steps that our responding technicians employ. There are multiple approaches to accomplishing this, including physical constructions around the perimeter of the damaged area to keep spreading effects like soot and odors in one area. These walls usually feature wood and thick plastic sheeting. Non-physical barriers are the equipment set up along this perimeter to contain environmental threats like soot particles, floating debris, ash, and odors.

Some other advantages to containing the damage include:

  • Singular recovery area
  • Maximizes drying and cleaning
  • Prevents the spread of harmful effects

How Do You Prevent Contaminating Clean Areas?

Cross-contamination can be a challenge to avoid on any recovery site. Our SERVPRO team sets up a staging area beside the primary damaged region of your house. This second space also gets contained with the same defense. This area allows us to manage tools getting used in the compromised space and our clothing to prevent contaminating other areas of the house. Setting up a staging area limits our trips in and out of the work area as well, which reduces the chances of contaminating other areas of the house.

Fire losses can be stressful enough without the effects spreading throughout your entire residence. Our SERVPRO of Central Seattle can help with effective containment to maximize our production and focus. Give our professionals a call anytime at (206) 282-9500.

Our trained SERVPRO technicians take the time to remove all burned materials, debris, and rubbish to help limit the amount of soot and odors circulating throughout the space. Once the initial cleanup is complete, we then implement the use of air-cleaning technology like air scrubbers or hydroxyl generators. Fighting the onset of soot and smoke is elemental after a fire. SERVPRO takes pride in professional odor removal. Our teams employ the use of dry and wet cleaning methods as well as eco-friendly cleaning solutions and specialized technology to clean items and remove odors. The combination of abrasives, cleaning sprays, or immersion cleaning used depends on the project and the level of fire damage.

Along with odor removal, fire damage restoration often calls for reconstruction using controlled demolition. SERVPRO technicians expose areas unsalvageable by way of cleaning techniques and ready the space for materials replacement.

Why Professional Restoration is Needed for Kitchen Fires in Seattle

3/10/2020 (Permalink)

Cooking pan on stove Pan on fire, Even if the fire is contained to the kitchen, greasy soot can spread throughout your home.

Why Advanced Training in Appropriate Kitchen Fire Damage Cleaning Is Crucial in Seattle

Cleaning up after a fire in your Seattle home requires more than an upbeat attitude and some elbow grease. Even if the flames subsided quickly, residues from the kitchen fire likely spread widely throughout your home. The soiling attaches to any surface, horizontal, vertical, or slanted, the hot air currents from the fire depositing the soot on cooler walls, ceilings, and furnishings often far from the ignition site. Residues are almost transparent but very bad smelling and tightly adhered to the surfaces.

Not Typical Household Dirt and Grime

To understand issues presented by fire damage in Seattle, imagine the interior of your oven after many roastings and broilings without cleaning. Think about the coatings in a microwave or outdoor grill that were not addressed immediately after cooking. The residues that drift through your home after a kitchen fire are similar, not the dry and ashy soot of a wood fire, but the remains of grease, oils, and proteins, now dehydrated and in every corner of your abode.

Principles and Elements of Cleaning

At SERVPRO, our technicians train extensively to ensure that our cleaning efforts are successful. First, we focus on the principles of cleaning:

  • Locating the fire residues
  • Identifying the type of residue
  • Identifying the types of surfaces affected
  • Capturing and removing residues for proper disposal

Armed with that knowledge, we approach cleaning tasks by manipulating the following elements of cleaning:

  • Temperature
  • Agitation
  • Chemical action
  • Time

How Do Protein-Based Residues Fit the Protocol?

SERVPRO technicians are familiar with the challenges of resolving kitchen fire residues. The greasy, almost varnish-like residues are impervious to the water-based cleansers frequently relied upon up as “one size fits all” solutions for cleanup. We use research-based procedures to break the bonds, utilizing the principle that “like dissolves like.” Instead of soap, we select a solvent and often choose to employ both agitation and abrasive tools to loosen the kitchen fire sourced soot. Detergents can also help us dislodge oily residues, acting with water to create an emulsion to suspend the dehydrated food and grease particles.

SERVPRO of Central Seattle has a highly-trained and skilled workforce ready to assist with your fire damage challenges. Call us at (206) 282-9500 to set up a prompt evaluation.

How SERVPRO Cleans Fire Damaged Fabrics in Seattle

1/27/2020 (Permalink)

smoke damaged wall and ceiling Smoke and soot damage are difficult to remove - especially in fabrics. SERVPRO has the know how to restore your home. Call us today!

Superior Cleaning Approaches Help Save Fabrics Affected by Fire Damage Incident in Seattle

Fire incidents in Seattle affect many materials in a house. Most fabric items are highly combustible, so they are readily consumed by the fire. We went to a kitchen fire loss site where the affected fabrics resided in sections where the flames did not reach. However, smoke spread all over the property, leaving massive deposits.

Before taking any steps to clean the residues left by the fire damage incident in Seattle, we had to perform elaborate pretesting. Without this step, we risked using the wrong cleaning product or method, leading to aggravation of the existing problem. For fabrics such as carpets, our SERVPRO technicians also had to confirm whether there were pre-existing problems since they are prone to problems such as bad seams, stains, and even burns.

During the pretesting phase, we identified various crucial factors that helped in cleaning, including:

Colorfast materials

  • Types of fibers in different fabrics
  • The type of soiling
  • The level of soling

The colorfastness problem mostly affects multicolored items such as area rugs, wool carpets, Persian, and Oriental rugs. Our SERVPRO technicians collected all the fabric items we identified as colorfast in the house, cleaning them separately to prevent them from spreading dyes and staining other items during the cleaning process.

The smoke damage had left oily residues, especially on the draperies. Cleaning such materials in conventional ways can leave traces of the oily residues. Our SERVPRO technicians are used to handling such forms of soiling. In this case, we used detergents with emulsifiers to remove the oily residues. The emulsifying process creates an emulsion in which residues turn to a liquid and evenly spread in another liquid without forming a solution.

Cleaning contents after fire incidents in Foster Island, Sodo, or Magnolia can pose various challenges. Call SERVPRO of Central Seattle at (206) 282-9500 to help find a way to deal with any challenging aspect. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

STOP!!! Can we get through Halloween first?? Sure, but the
holidays are right around the corner and will be here before we know it. We at SERVPRO want to give you
some Holiday Safety Tips so you make lasting memories with your family that do not include burning
your house down! According to National Fire Protection Assoctiation (NFPA), here are a few holiday
safety tips to remember;

Halloween

  • Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep all decorations away from open
flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
  • Use a battery-operated candle or glow-stick in jack-o lanterns. If you use a real candle, use
extreme caution. Make sure children are watched at all times when candles are lit. When
lighting candles inside jack-o lanterns, use long, fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter.
  • Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways and yards.

Thanksgiving

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
  • If deep frying your turkey, defrost the turkey COMPLETELY – and dry it before putting it in hot
    oil.
  • Keep a grease-rated fire extinguisher close by

Christmas

  • Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor
    or outdoor use.
  • Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.

Bottom Line
Be safe this Holiday Season.

Burning food can create odor causing damage in your kitchen

Why does the last 5 minutes of a football game on TV seem to take an hour? You decided to make that salmon dish your uncle was telling you about so you prepped for it first thing this morning.

Start of the 4th quarter you decided to put it into the oven right as your team fell behind 14 points and the game seemed over.

That's when the magic started!  The rookie they just drafted gets put in the game and the biggest comeback in franchise history starts.

They tie up the game with 10 seconds left as the wide receiver torched the defender.  Torched him so bad you can smell the burning as if you were there.

Wait.....that's not torched defender...that's your Salmon burning in the oven!

It's happened to us all, we see it every day.  If this happens to you call SERVPRO and we'll come out and repair the damage.  Not all smoke and soot are the same, and trained professionals like we have at SERVPRO know how to deal with each type that occurs.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Sometimes your Kitchen just needs to Vent

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

Vent On = Bad Odors and Moisture Out

We’ve all been there, it seemed like a good idea to cook the bacon on High heat but that Text from a friend or the person that distracted us from our stove was enough to make it happen.

“It” is that smell that enters your nostrils that makes your hard race as you run to the stove and turn down the heat.  As you fan smoke away from the pan you realize you’re spreading this smoke into other parts of the kitchen.  You reach for the fan and turn it on for the first time in a while.

Cranking the knob up to high you look over at the smoke detector and the race is on.

“Will the fan suck up the smoke before it gets to the smoke detector and informs everyone in the house you’ve just burned the bacon?”

The Kitchen Fan is mostly a Reactive function in the kitchen.  It rarely gets turned on until smoke comes out of a pan or that pot of water starts to fog up the room.

The perfect time to turn on the fan is actually Before you turn on the stove and start cooking.  The main purpose of the fan is to eliminate heat and odors from the cooking that you’re doing.  The moisture and odors tend to stick to the walls of your kitchen.

The odors and moisture builds up and can turn your kitchen area into a feeding ground for microbial growth.

How do you reduce the chance for moisture and odor issues in your kitchen? Be proactive and turn the Fan on every time you turn the stove on.

If you ever do run into issues in your Home or Commercial building reach out to SERVPRO and we’ll come out and take care of you.
